"made 4 tv version of Attempt 2 Score Sum Action 4 Daily Living": In the beginning of 1978 I proposed to a group of 7 friends that each of them propose an action for us both
to perform simultaneously at a set time of the day but in different locations.
This was my "Attempt 2 Score Sum Action 4 Daily Living".
The 7 friends were: Sumu Pretzler (Doug Retzler), Polio Vasslene (Paula Gillen), Lily Pad (Beth Downey), Chas (Charlie Brohawn), Laurie Stepp, Adolpho at Fuji (Alfred Harris), & Bonnie Bonnell. We came up with a plan with specified times & actions. This included such actions as: "9:30AM deal with a door as a responding partner simultaneously with sumu pretzler; 12:30PM hold 1 hand with t he other hand & get romantically involved with urself simultaneously with polio vasslene".
I found this to be a very interesting experience. I deliberately didn't document it because I wanted it to be something exclusively to be lived at the time.
3 & a half years later, I decided to make a "made 4 tv version" of it using the main video I had access to: 30 minute black & white Portapak reels. This time I invited a different group of 7 friends.
The 7 friends were: George Poscover, Dave Bowman, Laure Drogoul, Patty Karl, Nancy Andrews, Lee Warren, & Ro Malone. We came up with a new plan. This time, the plan
excluded me as a participant so that I could be the cameraperson. All of the actions were chosen by the participants. This included such actions as: "7:05AM nancy & lee walk in woods; 10:00AM dave & nancy xerox personal belongings then water fountain".
Each of the participants wore glasses that I'd made with prisms for lenses that were extremely disorienting. The plan included scripted camera movements that were disregarding of the visual content - such as a square-wave.
Unfortunately, I only shot 3 of the 7 tapes. These were intended to be played on 3 separate monitors but I had no such lavish access. In 1990, I made a single monitor version. This version might've only been screened once - at the BAUhouse Gallery in BalTimOre on Thursday, September 27, 1990E.V..
Since I'm revisiting older work & trying to get most of it online & since that single screen version is too glitchy, I've made this newer version that takes advantage of my better working conditions. It's still glitchy but I've edited out many of the glitches so they aren't so distracting.
One thing that impresses me about this in retrospect is the intelligence, talent, & openness of all the participants. This was truly a creative community very actively engaged.
